Defy

SOOOOO i am in government and it would probably be in my best interest to do homework but i just finished defy by sara b larson and i wanted to write about it while it was fresh on the old thinker. also im not advertising (trust me i wish i got paid for this) but whatshouldireadnext.com is this epic website i found where you enter an author or book or series and it generates a bunch of similar books you may like, its actually how i heard about defy. speaking of which shall we talk about this lil book? okay if you insist. mulan err umm i mean alex(a) and her twin brother marcel live in a mid-evil world with sorcery and sword fights, all the woman are sent to "breeding houses" to have mas bebitas who will become soldiers for the king and all the boys become soldiers for the kind, can you decide not to fight for the king? sure of course they aren't that unreasonable allow us to escort you to the execution chamber where we can discuss other job options. anyways alexa is a girl and her twin brother marcel doesn't want to loose her so they learn to fight, cut her hair, and join the army together. alexa learns to cross dress like a champ and eventually ends up on the princes personal elite guard and shes the best fighter there is. mulan er um *wheezes* i mean alex begins to get closer to the prince and kind of likes him but she dressin as a dude and no one can know so feelings for cute boys will just have to wait. now even though she is the best of the best she cant stop sorcerers from kidnapping her, rylan (a fellow guard), and the prince. the further they get into the journey the more she realizes she isn't the only one with secrets DUN DUN DUHHHH. so overall i thought this was a pretty great book (i only read the first one but it is a three book series) the romance was a bit overwhelming like one moment you are pretending to be a boy and for that reason you cant show affection to other boys in this world and the next moment she is smack dab in the middle of a love triangle. 0 to 100 real quick. like her relationships move so fast i think i have whip lash. mulan *chokes on life* i mean alex is a pretty cool character she fights better than all the boys and there is definitely a ton of feminine empowerment and gender role fighting in the book. the supporting characters were pretty generic a salty entitled prince who is secretly super kind and the lovable best friend who has liked liked her since the beginning. gennnneeeeerrrrriiiiiccccc but enjoyable non the less. the only thing that kind of made me sad (and this was a matter of taste) is that i love humor in books, i don't think it has to be a comedy but i appreciate one liners and funny banter. their is no humor in this book like zipo zero zilch. there were soooo many scenes i wanted alexa to drop a funny one liner on all her haters but they are all pretty proper and don't crack any jokes. so i would recommend reading mulan the book *dies* i mean defy by sara b larson its pretty good leaves a bit to be desired and will slap you upside the head with intense romantic feelings but its still entertaining and fun to watch a girl kick ass.
im gonna go fail a vocab test. thanks for reading.
